Intelligent charging at home

Private charging station for your electric vehicle

The transformation to E-mobility is gathering pace. Owning a private charging station is an important step to prepare for this change. At home, your electric vehicle is in a protected private space. It will be parked there for many hours in a row. Charging for extended periods will, therefore, not be an obstacle.  Another benefit: If you get the electricity to charge the electric vehicle from your PV-system and connected solar power storage unit, you will do so cheaply and 100% climate-friendly.

What is a private charging station?

A private charging station allows you to charge your electric vehicle at home or in the workplace. It is therefore typically installed directly at the house, a garage, a covered carport or an underground car park. You connect your electric vehicle to the mains via this device. A private charging station is a safe, convenient, efficient and faster alternative to charging over a domestic socket. Alternative terms for charging solutions such as wallbox, charging point or EV charger are also in use.

Owning a private charging station? Benefits and downsides

Benefits

  • Much safer and more potent than charging via a domestic socket
  • Wallbox communicates with the electric vehicle and prevents overloading
  • Integrated charging cable and LED display for maximum ease of operation
  • Higher charging power - 11 or 22 kW instead of 2.3 kW from a domestic socket
  • Significantly reduced charging time compared to domestic socket charging
  • No need to search for public charging stations

Benefits when combined with a photovoltaic system

  • Environmentally friendly charging
  • Increased self-consumption
  • Substantial cost savings

Downside

  • One-off investment required

Types of private charging stations: 11 or 22 kilowatts

Two main sizes of private charging stations are currently established in the market: 11 kilowatts and 22 kilowatts of charging power. In most cases, 11 kilowatts of charging power are sufficient to fully charge even larger electric vehicles overnight. If you need to charge at a faster rate, a 22 kW Wallbox can be an interesting and beneficial option. For instance, at workplaces where electric transporter or service vehicles are required to be ready for use after a quick charging turnaround.

RFID protects against unauthorised access

Modern charging stations have an integrated RFID reader. RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification. The RFID reader can establish a contactless connection to an object with an embedded RFID tag via electromagnetic waves. The RFID reader will then process the information stored in the RFID tag's microchip and uniquely identify the object. A card with an embedded RFID tag authenticates users at your private charging station and activates the charging process. This will prevent unauthorised access. The electricity drawn via the  charging station is assigned to the vehicle associated with the card and invoiced as required.

Get power for a private charging station correctly

If you install a private charging station at home, there are usually three options to connect it properly:

1. You have the private charging station connected to the household electricity meter.

2. You request a special automobile electricity tariff from your electricity supplier. Usually the cost per kilowatt hour will be lower than your regular tariff. A requirement is that a separate and controllable meter is installed and captures the electricity demand of the charging station.

3. You connect the charging station to your private PV-system which will generate electricity for your electric vehicle almost free of charge.

In general, E-mobility will only fully realise its environmental benefits if the required electricity is generated from renewable energy sources such as solar, wind or water power. Self-generated solar power is the ideal source. You can be certain that the electricity is derived from 100% renewables and has not been transported over long distances with the associated loss of efficiency.

Charging more intelligently

The RCT Power Wallbox features different charging strategies. They are set from a web browser or with a key switch. You can adapt the charging process to your needs and thus reduce the cost of charging.

PRIO charging: Charging with maximum power from the mains.

ECO charging: The electric vehicle is charged with the minimum required charging power. The energy will be supplied by the PV system, the solar power storage unit and, if necessary, the public grid.

AI charging: Charging using exclusively excess power from the PV-system.

ADD ON charging: Charging with a combination of solar power and power from the mains. The maximum mains power can be set.
